HATS off to Tim Rutten for correctly and courageously identifying the irrational roots of the current Muslim protests [“Drawn Into a Religious Conflict,” Feb. 4]. I’m afraid the calls for an uprising of Muslim “moderation” are futile. The West is confronting something it truly does not understand: real religious fanaticism. Those who thought that term applied to Jerry Falwell and James Dobson are about to learn the difference.

WOULD that Rutten’s clear thinking was more frequently in evidence at The Times and other liberal papers, which routinely publish offensive photos, tasteless art and any number of truly damaging stories but which in the present case will not let us know what, precisely, is the cause of all the furor. Thank God for the Internet, where the photos are available so that we may make our own judgments.
