Cellphones belonging to top Greek military and government officials, the U.S. Embassy and some journalists and human rights activists were tapped for nearly a year starting before the 2004 Olympics, the government said.
It was not known who was responsible. Those tapped included Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and his wife.
The eavesdropping, discovered in March 2005, was facilitated by software installed in the central system of Vodafone, the wireless provider that served the targets, government spokesman Theodoros Roussopoulos said.
