Slain Peacekeepers in Congo Were Tortured

The bodies of eight Guatemalan peacekeepers slain during a hunt for a Ugandan rebel leader in Congo last month showed signs of torture, and one was badly mutilated, a U.N. diplomat said.
“They found all of them with their hands tied and signs of abuse. And one was disfigured beyond recognition,” said the diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because U.N. investigations were underway.
Officials have said Guatemalan special forces troops were ambushed during a secret mission to try to capture or kill Vincent Otti, deputy commander of Uganda’s notorious Lord’s Resistance Army.
