War strategy seems misdirected

Re “Generals say more troops needed in Iraq,” Dec. 23
For three years, the generals were falling in line with their civilian bosses. Like lambs to the slaughter, they led and misled the troops and the nation. Now, when the situation in Iraq is irreversible (indeed, will be exacerbated with additional troops), the generals speak up for their flip-flopping civilian bosses. This entire exercise has only one purpose -- to continue our presence in the region so this lame-duck president does not have to admit defeat, leaving the mess to the next occupant of the Oval Office. I am sickened by what has become of my country.

I see that top military commanders have recommended sending more troops to Iraq. I also see that the Selective Service System is testing its equipment. I would support the drafting of my 20-year-old son after all supporters of the Iraq war have their sons and daughters enlist, both women and men are drafted and Congress can ensure that our troops have the armor and equipment they need.

The subhead of this article sums up this whole mess: “Strategy not yet clear.” Let’s hope 2007 is a year of clarity for the generals, majors and the commander in chief.

Escalating the war worked so well in Vietnam that we need to try it again in Iraq.
