Sharks close strong to upend Red Wings

Joe Pavelski’s goal with 5.9 seconds left capped San Jose’s comeback and gave the Sharks a 3-2 win over the host Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
San Jose, which won its fifth straight, also got goals from Patrick Marleau and Mark Bell.
Mikael Samuelsson and Mathieu Schneider scored for Detroit.
Bell tied it at 2-2 with 3:31 left in regulation, putting his own rebound past Joey MacDonald.
Chicago 4, Nashville 3 -- Jeffrey Hamilton scored a career-high three goals, including the winner in overtime, to lead the Blackhawks at Nashville. Chicago is 3-0 under new Coach Denis Savard.
Columbus 4, Edmonton 0 -- Fredrik Norrena made 21 saves in his first NHL shutout, lifting the Blue Jackets at Edmonton, Canada, over the Oilers, who lost captain Ryan Smyth to a broken thumb.
Washington 7, Buffalo 4 -- Richard Zednik and Bryan Muir scored 34 seconds apart during a four-goal first period at Washington, and the Capitals overcame Alex Ovechkin’s first ejection.
Dallas 4, Minnesota 3 -- Sergei Zubov, Jussi Jokinen and Mike Ribeiro scored in the shootout as the host Stars ended a three-game losing streak.
Montreal 4, Toronto 3 -- Sheldon Souray scored the shootout winner after Saku Koivu scored twice in the third period for the host Canadiens.
N.Y. Islanders 5, Pittsburgh 3 -- Viktor Kozlov and Mike Sillinger scored twice, and Miroslav Satan scored his 300th goal for the visiting Islanders.
New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 3 -- Zach Parise and Brian Gionta scored on backhanded shots during the shootout to give the visiting Devils the victory.
Atlanta 3, Florida 1 -- Glen Metropolit scored the tiebreaking goal in the second period and Kari Lehtonen had 27 saves for the Thrashers at Sunrise, Fla.
Vancouver 2, Colorado 1 -- Taylor Pyatt scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Roberto Luongo made 40 saves to lift the host Canucks.
Carolina 5, Boston 2 -- Eric Staal had two goals and Justin Williams had a short-hander for the Hurricanes at Raleigh, N.C.
Ottawa 5, Tampa Bay 2 -- Antoine Vermette scored twice and Jason Spezza had a goal and an assist for the host Senators.
