Kansas City 4 at Minnesota 3: Luke Hudson (7-5) gave up five hits in seven innings and Ryan Shealy had a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning to beat the Twins for the second straight night and drop them 1 1/2 games behind Chicago in the wild-card standings. Minnesota, which has lost three in a row overall, began the series with a half a game lead on the White Sox after taking two of three in Chicago. Twins starter Boof Bonser (3-5) tied his career high with eight strikeouts.

at Chicago 5, Tampa Bay 4: Tadahito Iguchi tied it with a two-out, two-run homer, and Jim Thome celebrated his return to the lineup with a go-ahead single as the White Sox scored three in the eighth to prevail. Thome had sat out five games because of a strained hamstring. Jon Garland (16-4) tied for the major league lead in victories despite giving up three first-inning runs.

at Oakland 7, Boston 2: Barry Zito (15-8) outpitched Curt Schilling (14-7) on a day the Red Sox ace became the 14th pitcher with 3,000 career strikeouts, Mark Ellis and Bobby Kielty each hit solo home runs and the Athletics completed a three-game sweep.

at Cleveland 3, Toronto 2: Jhonny Peralta hit a two-out homer off closer B.J. Ryan in the 10th inning to give the Indians a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays.

Baltimore 7, at Texas 4: Jay Gibbons hit a go-ahead RBI double to spark the Orioles’ three-run 10th inning at Arlington.
