Servite Finishes Cubs In a Flurry

Quarterback Daniel Klein scored on a three-yard draw, reaching the ball across the goal line on a fourth-down play as time expired, and kicker Kevin Goessling added the extra point to give Anaheim Servite a 29-28 Serra League victory over Los Angeles Loyola on Saturday night at Glendale High.

Servite (5-3, 2-1 in league play) put together a 75-yard drive in the final 63 seconds without the aid of a timeout. Klein completed six of 11 passes, spiking the ball twice to stop the clock, for 62 yards on the drive. Loyola (5-3, 1-2) had a 25-8 lead with 6:12 left in the third quarter, but it’s offense stalled.

The victory moves Servite into sole possession of second place in the Serra League, one game behind Santa Ana Mater Dei. The Cubs are in a four-way tie for third -- and last.

Klein completed 20 of 32 passes for 197 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Dennis Shoemate had eight catches for 81 yards and a touchdown and Christopher Galippo had five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown.

Running back Chad Peppars had 171 yards and two touchdowns to lead Loyola, which missed a 34-yard field-goal try at the end of the half. The Cubs took possession with three minutes to play but converted only one first down before punting.

Girls’ Volleyball

Redondo senior Rebecca Saraceno had nine kills and four blocks and her younger sister, Megan, served for 14 points -- including two aces -- to lead the No. 2-seeded Seahawks to a 25-19, 25-23 win over fifth-seeded Placentia El Dorado in the championship match of the Redondo tournament.

Redondo (23-7), which also won the 32-team event in 2002, defeated San Diego Vista, Orange Lutheran and Santa Margarita in earlier rounds Saturday.

Rebecca Saraceno, a 6-1 middle blocker, was selected the tournament’s most valuable player. She finished with 24 kills, eight aces and five digs on the day. Megan Saraceno, a sophomore outside hitter, finished with 14 kills and 15 digs on the day. Sophomore outside hitter Devon Dykstra added eight kills in 15 attempts with no errors against El Dorado, finishing with 26 kills, four blocks and 15 digs.

All three Seahawks were selected to the all-tournament team, along with senior setter Brittany Roderick, who returned this week from a right-knee injury. All-tournament selections for El Dorado (22-4) were Megan Golovkin and opposite hitter Kinsey Cave.

The Golden Hawks upended top-seeded San Diego Parker, 31-29, 25-20, in the semifinals.
