U.S. Harms Itself by Its Guantanamo Practices

There are 540 people being held at Guantanamo Bay on suspicion of being enemy combatants in what is essentially a U.S.-sanctioned gulag (May 26).

The Defense Department argues that the detention prevents these so-called enemy combatants from fighting against the U.S.

However, by holding them without due process, the U.S. military is as far from supporting American values as is possible, and the terrorists’ aim of disruption and discrediting of our way of life is being achieved.

These men deserve a fair hearing, a chance to face their accusers and defend themselves. If the U.S.A. is to own the higher moral ground, then we ought to start following the rule of law ourselves.
