Zarqawi Is Well, Statement Says
CAIRO — An Internet audio statement purportedly from Iraq’s insurgent leader Abu Musab Zarqawi told Osama bin Laden on Monday that Zarqawi was in good health after being wounded by U.S. troops.
There was no way to confirm that the voice was that of the Jordanian-born Zarqawi. The recording was carried by a website frequently used by militant Islamic groups and sounded similar to those previously attributed to Zarqawi.
“I am sure you have heard through the media that I was wounded and treated in a Ramadi hospital. I would like to assure you and the Muslim nation that ... it was a light wound,†the statement said.
The recording posted Monday followed previous postings on the Internet saying the Jordanian was in good health and had returned to lead insurgent attacks in Iraq after being wounded.
