Prior Injured in Win Over Rockies
Mark Prior had to leave the Chicago Cubs’ 10-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Friday at Wrigley Field after he was hit in his pitching arm by a line drive.
Leading off the fourth, Brad Hawpe hit a liner off Prior’s right elbow. The ball caromed toward third, where Aramis Ramirez caught it.
Prior collapsed and writhed in pain on the mound before being helped off the field by the training staff and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
X-rays of the arm were negative, and Mark O’Neal, the Cubs’ head trainer, said Prior would undergo an MRI test, the results of which are expected to be ready today.
O’Neal would not guess how long Prior, who started the season on the disabled list because of inflammation in the elbow, might be out.
Neifi Perez drove in four runs with a two-run homer and double to match a career high, and Derrek Lee hit two solo shots to take over the National League home run lead with 14.
Prior was replaced by Todd Wellemeyer (1-0), who pitched 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
New York 1, Florida 0 -- Pedro Martinez pitched five-hit ball for eight dominant innings and struck out 10, and Cliff Floyd had a run-scoring double to lead the Mets at Miami.
Martinez (5-1) now has 102 double-digit strikeout games to rank fourth in major league history behind Nolan Ryan (215), Randy Johnson (204) and Roger Clemens (109).
Milwaukee 3, Houston 0 -- The Brewers, who have given up only three runs in their last four games, won their sixth in a row at Miller Park, where they have won 13 of their last 16. The Astros, 1-6 on their current trip, are 3-22 away from Minute Maid Park.
Doug Davis (6-5) yielded two hits in seven innings to beat Roy Oswalt. Before leaving because of back stiffness, Oswalt (5-6) gave up one run and two hits in six innings.
Philadelphia 5, Atlanta 1 -- Jim Thome hit a three-run homer off John Smoltz (3-4) in a four-run first inning, and the Phillies ended the Braves’ eight-game home winning streak. The four runs off Smoltz ended a 19-inning scoreless streak by Brave pitchers.
Cincinnati 6, Pittsburgh 5 -- Jason Romano scored from third on Felipe Lopez’s grounder in the bottom of the ninth inning. Romano, a former Dodger, doubled with one out, took third on an infield single and beat the throw home by shortstop Freddy Sanchez.
St. Louis 6, Washington 3 -- Jim Edmonds homered, doubled twice and had four RBIs, and Matt Morris (5-0) remained unbeaten in nine starts to help the Cardinals win their fourth in a row.
San Diego 9, San Francisco 3 -- Brian Giles homered and drove in three runs, and Phil Nevin had a two-run double and finished with three RBIs to leads the Padres at San Francisco.
