Obermueller Gets Close to Perfection

Wes Obermueller had a perfect game with one out in the seventh inning.

Then, for the first time all game, he shook off his catcher’s sign.

“He called a fastball in,” Obermueller said. “And I wanted fastball away.”

Bad decision. The fastball away was a little too high. Jamey Carroll slapped the 1-and-2 pitch into right field for a clean single, forcing Obermueller to settle for a victory without the immortality in the Milwaukee Brewers’ 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals Tuesday night in Washington.

“I won’t ever second-guess my catcher again, I’ll tell you that,” Obermueller said.

Still, the third-year right-hander’s first victory since September was a gem. He gave up two hits, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter through eight scoreless innings.

Brady Clark homered on the first pitch of the game and went four for five to help the Brewers end a three-game losing streak.

San Diego 3, Atlanta 2 -- Khalil Greene singled in the winning run with one out in the ninth inning and the Padres rallied for the third straight game, beating the Braves at San Diego for their sixth straight victory.

The Padres, who scored twice in the ninth against Dan Kolb (1-4), won for the 15th time in 18 games. Kolb blew his third save in 13 tries.

Padre second baseman Mark Loretta left the game after spraining his left thumb sliding headfirst into first base in the third inning.

Houston 3, Arizona 0 -- Roy Oswalt pitched eight strong innings at Houston to stay unbeaten against the Diamondbacks, and pinch-hitter Jose Vizcaino had a two-run single with the bases loaded in the eighth. Oswalt is 4-0 in four career starts against Arizona.

Colorado 9, San Francisco 4 -- Dustan Mohr tripled and homered and newly acquired Blaine Neal anchored a strong outing by the bullpen to lift the Rockies at Denver. The bullpen held the Giants scoreless over the last four innings.

Philadelphia 7, St. Louis 5 -- Bobby Abreu hit his eighth homer in nine games, his 10th in May, as the last-place Phillies overcame their first five-error game since July 15, 2002 to win at Philadelphia.

New York 2, Cincinnati 1 -- Kaz Matsui turned New York fans’ boos to cheers with a two-run homer in the seventh off Ramon Ortiz (1-2) to lead the Mets.

Chicago 4, Pittsburgh 3 -- Derrek Lee homered twice, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the ninth at Pittsburgh off Jose Mesa (0-2), who had converted his 13 previous save chances this season.
