A 23-year-old sailor who opposes the U.S. war in Iraq was convicted Wednesday of refusing to deploy with his ship to the Persian Gulf as a protest.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Pablo Paredes was convicted by a military judge after a one-day hearing. He could face up to a year in the brig and a bad-conduct discharge.
Paredes was scheduled to leave aboard the amphibious assault ship Bonhomme Richard on Dec. 6, but instead arrived wearing a T-shirt indicating he had quit the Navy.
