Hattabaugh Sharp for Amat
La Puente Bishop Amat senior Jon-Michael Hattabaugh, pitching in only his third varsity baseball game, threw a six-hitter to defeat Santa Ana Mater Dei, 7-1, in a Serra League game Wednesday at Bishop Amat.
Hattabaugh (3-0) stranded 10 runners while striking out five and walking four.
“They haven’t really needed me in the past,†said Hattabaugh, who began working on his pitching last summer.
But the Lancers (6-1 overall, 2-0 in league), ranked No. 17 in the Southland by The Times, had only two returning starters this season, and neither was a pitcher. Senior Randy Serrato, who alternates with Hattabaugh on the mound and at first base, also had not thrown a varsity pitch until this season.
Mater Dei (7-3, 2-1) committed five errors in the first four innings.
