Fighters from rival clans battled for control of a town in southern Somalia, killing at least 20 people and wounding more than 30 others, witnesses said.

Fighting in Ealwaq began late Friday when militiamen from the Darod clan sought to recapture the town after they were pushed out by the Hawiye clan six weeks ago. It was unclear which side emerged with control of Ealwaq, west of Mogadishu, when fighting ended Saturday.

Somalia has in effect been without a government since 1991, and the nation of 8.5 million is a patchwork of battling fiefdoms.
