Close to Winning Is a Lot Like Losing
Monday night, the Galaxy lost to Real Madrid, 2-0, in a match that was not as close as the score. In his account of the game, Grahame L. Jones seemed to indicate that this was some kind of moral victory. In sports, there are no moral victories, and such characterizations are nothing more than an excuse for failure.
As long as such results are glossed over, soccer will remain as it always has -- a second-tier sport in this country

T.J. Simers [“Making It Through Soccer Match Is Real Kick,†July 19] is hilarious! I have some tips on how to make his article even funnier, though. Instead of starting off with his story about how he missed the goal in that Cosmos game, how about how he missed the lone knockdown in the first Frazier-Ali fight? Or the lone hit in Sandy Koufax’s perfect game?
Get that guy some Depends or a catheter if he can’t wait 45 minutes until halftime. Of course, 45 minutes is about how long the last two minutes of an NFL game take, but then there are all of those commercials to watch so the big bad players can stand around for minutes on end between five-second plays. That’s what makes for a great athletic competition. We should stop for more commercials for sportswriters with weak bladders and short attention spans.
Hilarious? Let me rephrase that. T.J. Simers is laughable.

The use of the word “phony†as in “Phony Madrid†by Mr. Simers should be reserved for the oversized, steroid-abusing, tobacco-chewing football and baseball players that he probably worships so much.
