Mets Rough Up Peavy and Padres
David Wright singled and doubled during a seven-run sixth inning, and the New York Mets roughed up San Diego’s Jake Peavy in a 12-0 victory Thursday at Shea Stadium that completed a three-game sweep of the National League West-leading Padres.
San Diego lost its fourth in a row, one shy of its longest skid of the season.
“It wouldn’t have made any difference which park we played in,” Padre Manager Bruce Bochy said. “We could have played in Williamsport today and still made it look ugly.”
New York moved past Philadelphia into third place in the National League East, inching closer to division leaders Washington and Atlanta, and improved to 5-2 on a 10-game homestand that concludes this weekend against the Dodgers.
“We’ve got to make a statement in the division, and we’re in a position where we can’t wait any longer,” Manager Willie Randolph said.
“We can still make some serious hay in the division.”
Kazuhisa Ishii (3-8) won at home for the first time since the Mets acquired him from the Dodgers during spring training.
