Alfred Freiherr von Oppenheim, 70; Partner in German Bank

Alfred Freiherr von Oppenheim, head of the supervisory board of Germany’s biggest family-owned private bank, Sal. Oppenheim jr. & Cie, died Wednesday in his hometown of Cologne after a short illness, the bank announced. He was 70.
Oppenheim became a partner in the bank, founded in 1789 by Salomon Oppenheim, in 1964. He took charge of the bank’s shareholder and supervisory boards in 1993.
Oppenheim was a 1956 graduate of Amherst College, held an MBA from Harvard University and was vice president of Germany’s DIHK industry and trade association, the bank said. In 2003, he was awarded the Croix de Commandeur from the French Legion of Honor for promoting political and cultural relations between Germany and France.
