World Clocks to Pick Up Another Second Today

For the first time since 1998, the world’s timekeepers will add an extra second to clocks today to keep them in synchronization with the sun and stars.
The New Year’s Eve leap second is necessary because the Earth’s rotation is slowing ever so slightly. Observers can hear the extra second tick off by tuning to shortwave station WWV at 5 or 10 megahertz at 3:59 p.m. PST. This is the 23rd leap second to be inserted since 1972.
