Iraq constitution looks like a recipe for disaster
Re “Draft Clearly Shows Points of Contention,†Aug. 29
Perhaps the Iraqis would find it easier to agree on a constitution if the United States would guarantee to restore full electricity, water and sewage facilities for all Iraqis before the referendum. This would be a good use of our tax dollars.

Good grief. Iraqi lawmakers are now “finished†with their proposed new constitution. It ignores the Sunni case for a strong central government, establishes a structural Islamic theocracy much like Iran and essentially defers social justice and the role of women to its official clergy. It’s a clear recipe for civil war and insurgence. In response, President Bush issues a long statement of congratulations! Will someone please remind ex-Yale cheerleader Bush that critical challenges call for intelligence, planning and, above all, powerful leadership?

We constantly are told by Bush, conservatives and some Democrats that creating or even discussing withdrawal from Iraq would send the wrong message to our soldiers. Which message would encourage you: that we will bring you home in a reasonable, safe manner and time frame, or that you will be deployed indefinitely without the mention of a “deadline†in what has increasingly become a bloody, untenable situation?
