Reruns rule but football pass connects
Summer reruns ruled last week, and so did CBS, whose retreads claimed nine of the top 10 slots and helped that network to another ratings victory. “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation†was the top-rated show, and only ABC’s exhibition football broadcast (ranked eighth) spoiled CBS’ top 10 sweep, according to figures released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research.
Fox’s summer hit “So You Think You Can Dance†remained a high stepper in 13th place. But ABC’s “Brat Camp,†which initially appeared to buck the summer’s trend of a general lack of interest in first-run programming, ended its run with its lowest viewership: 6.4 million.
After drawing 10.4 million viewers for its July 13 premiere -- the second most for a season premiere this summer -- viewership for “Brat Camp†dropped for each episode. The audience for the finale was 11% lower than for the previous week’s installment.
For the 13th week in a row, CBS remained the most popular network in prime time, averaging 7.71 million viewers. Fox vaulted to second place from fourth the previous week, averaging 5.96 million, while NBC had 5.84 million and ABC 5.66 million.
“NBC Nightly News†had 8.1 million viewers while ABC’s “World News Tonight†averaged 7.8 million viewers and “CBS Evening News†6.4 million.
Here are the rankings for national prime-time network television last week (Aug. 22-28) as compiled by Nielsen Media Research. They are based on the average number of people who watched a program from start to finish. Nielsen estimates there are 277.93 million potential viewers in the U.S. age 2 and older. Viewership is listed in millions.
