Punta del Este Isn’t the Caribbean or Italy; It’s Simply Punta del Este

Why do travel writers so often feel the need to compare the locale they are describing to some place they know or already have visited? It sounds to me like Punta del Este is unique in its own way and has a very special South American appeal (“South America’s Charm Bracelet,” by Jerry V. Haines, Special Travel Issue, March 20). No, it is not Minnesota, Italy or St. Bart’s, but if it were, why would you go there? I have been lucky to have lived overseas for lengthy periods of time on three separate occasions and have traveled the world extensively. Whenever I visit a new place, I go there with an open mind.
