About 500 San Bernardino residents were allowed to return home Thursday morning after being evacuated following the derailment Monday night of a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals, officials said.
The evacuation order was lifted at 2:40 a.m. after chlorine and combustible liquid were safely transferred from derailed tank cars to other containers, a Union Pacific spokesman said.
The 640 feet of damaged track was repaired and open by 9 a.m. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, a Union Pacific spokesman said.
