Dogs Sniff Out Signs of Bladder Cancer
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Dogs can identify people with bladder cancer by sniffing their urine, researchers reported in this week’s British Medical Journal. Researchers are not yet sure, however, what compounds in the urine the animals are identifying.
In blinded tests, dogs identified the correct urine sample 41% of the time; by chance alone, they should have been accurate only 14% of the time. The best dogs were right 56% of the time, and researchers believe the accuracy can be improved with further training.
