Harlem troupe to disband

Dance Theatre of Harlem, the highly regarded New York ballet company founded 35 years ago by former New York City Ballet dancer Arthur Mitchell, will announce today that it is disbanding its 44-member troupe and ceasing operations for the rest of the 2004-05 season, publicist Ellen Zeisler said Monday.
“The big problem -- and the only problem we have -- is that we have some debt consolidation that must be made,” Zeisler said. “But that debt consolidation has nothing to do with salaries. It’s more operational.”
According to an account published in the New York Times in May, the company is $2.5 million in debt.
Zeisler said that the company school, which teaches 1,000 students a week, will continue operating, as will other educational activities.
