Edison Puts On Powerful Display

With 16 returning starters from a Southern Section Division I quarterfinalist, Huntington Beach Edison showed Friday night it has the offensive and defensive firepower to challenge the best this season.

Junior quarterback Brian Shrock completed nine of 13 passes for 183 yards and four touchdowns and senior running back Abel Cardona rushed for 132 yards in 21 carries in the Chargers’ 34-9 season-opening victory over Anaheim Servite at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

A year ago the Chargers couldn’t muster much offense in a 7-0 loss to Servite, but a much-improved offensive line, led by 6-foot-2, 260-pound junior tackle Romney Fuga, combined with Shrock’s maturity should make Edison’s offense more productive.

“I’ve learned a lot in a year,� Shrock said. “Our offensive line blocked like we’ve never had before.�

Edison, ranked No. 4 in the Southland by The Times, also received a boost from a newcomer, sophomore Hunter White, son of Edison Coach Dave White. Hunter caught a 24-yard touchdown pass and made two tackles for losses from his defensive back position. Receiver Ryan Davis contributed touchdowns of 30 and 62 yards on flanker screens.

Servite scored its only touchdown on its opening possession, capped by a 30-yard pass play from quarterback Andrew Boyle to Omar Ramiro. But Edison’s defense picked up where it left off last year when the Chargers limited opponents to one touchdown or less in eight of their 12 games.

In games involving other top-25 teams, No. 3 Los Alamitos defeated Goleta Dos Pueblos, 38-19; No. 10 Ventura St. Bonaventure defeated Ridgecrest Burroughs, 38-26; No. 12 La Puente Bishop Amat lost, 39-33, to Vista; No. 19 West Covina South Hills fell, 21-7, to Anaheim Esperanza.

In top performances Friday:

* Emery Curtis rushed for 226 yards in 11 carries, scoring on runs of five, 34 and 74 yards, and John Estrada added 123 yards in three carries for L.A. Belmont in a 35-18 victory over Hollywood, which rushed for more than 300 yards.

* Brandon Spicer scored five touchdowns, gaining 165 yards in 22 carries for Monrovia in a 60-7 victory over La Puente Bassett.
