Get your hat and your groove on
It’s that time of year again, the night of a thousand fedoras. On Sunday, veteran club promoter MacAfrica celebrates her birthday at the Key Club with her 15th annual hat party, where guests don their favorite caps and get wiggy to a multitude of DJs and music. This year’s party is headlined by Jeff Goldblum’s Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, and Mac hired five DJs to fill out the WeHo nightclub’s various rooms. Past madhatters include Coolio, Bill Maher and Ivy Supersonic, a famous New York-based milliner. This year, guests can score wholesale hats by Goorin, a way cool San Francisco cap company that’s been in the biz since 1895.

Providing a shirt, a shot and a show
Don’t miss Guttermouth’s show at the Hermosa Beach club Pointe 705 on Sept. 19. The cheeky O.C. punk band is a legend in its own time for patenting the concept of throwing in a free well shot to anyone who buys one of their shirts. Burp! (IDs required.) And you might want to check out the band’s song, “Surf’s Up ... “ on the new record, “Eat Your Face.” It’s a pointed nontribute to the men of Huntington Beach.... And while we’re kicking it with cheeky punks, we hear the Adz are back in effect. An offspring of the Adolescents, the Adz are performing tonight at the Showcase in Corona and Friday at the Galaxy in Santa Ana. For vets, they still trip the light fantastic.

Social Distortion hits Street Scene
We hear the 20th annual San Diego Street Scene was off the chain. The two-day music festival last weekend allowed Social Distortion fans to get an earful of the band’s new touring bass player, Rancid’s Matt Freeman (who took advantage of some Rancid time off to step in when longtime bassist John Maurer decided he’d had enough of the road). Folks also got to check out Jack Johnson, AFI and the Foo Fighters. Not too shabby.
