Stuart Taylor, 91; Ex-Publisher of Santa Barbara News-Press

Stuart Taylor, 91, publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press from 1964 to 1984, died Sunday at his home in Montecito of natural causes.
A native of Norfolk, Va., who grew up in Baltimore, Taylor graduated from the University of Virginia in 1935 and served in the Army during World War II. He later worked at the Philadelphia Bulletin as a sports and city government reporter and eventually rose to become vice president.
Taylor was appointed publisher of the Santa Barbara newspaper when it was purchased by the Philadelphia Bulletin.
The California Newspaper Assn. named him publisher of the year in 1969 for leading the News-Press coverage of the Santa Barbara Channel oil spill.
Active in several charitable organizations, Taylor served on the board of United Way of Santa Barbara County for 20 years. He was also on boards of the Cottage Hospital, Cancer Foundation, UCSB Foundation, Santa Barbara Foundation and Laguna Blanca School.
