A Sovereign California, All Joking Aside

Re “And Arnold Could Be Its President ... “ Sept. 29: I truly enjoyed Patt Morrison’s piece about an independent California. It’s no secret that the U.S. needs California more than vice versa. If California were able to keep all of that revenue we send to Washington, we would be a strong No. 4 among the world’s nations. Best of all, we could use our newfound sovereignty to negotiate a truly sane immigrant workers policy with Mexico to the benefit of both nations.

Morrison’s secession idea is more valid than her tongue-in-cheek approach suggests. If we could figure out how to solve the Medicare and Social Security entitlements, why not? In addition to her other points, we send more of our tax money to Washington than we get in return.
