Preserve’s next step: trail access

The Rancho Palos Verdes City Council is scheduled Saturday to consider trail access for the Forrestal Nature Preserve that attempts to balance the needs of hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians and homeowners.

People trekked the 160 acres of land for years until a management plan sparked bickering among users and residents. The plan would close some trails to horses and mountain bikes but allow them on others. The local Sierra Club says too many trail users lead to conflicts and damages rare plants and animals.

“We want to err on the side of public access,” says Barbara Dye of Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy, which manages the preserve. The meeting begins at 10 a.m. at the Ladera Linda Community Center at 32201 Forrestal Drive. Details: www.palosverdes.com/rpv/planning.
