Same-sex marriages

Under the direction of San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, county officials began marrying same-sex couples on Feb. 12 and continued until March 11, when the California Supreme Court ordered them to stop -- at least for now.
Who got the licenses
* 4,037 same-sex marriage licenses were issued
* 91% of the couples were from California
* The rest came from 45 other states and several foreign countries
* 69% have a college degree or higher education
Gay men: 42%
Lesbians: 57%
Age groups
18-35: 26%
36-50: 55%
51 and older: 19%
