Red Wings Hand Predators a Loss

All the Detroit Red Wings needed Sunday night was Brendan Shanahan.

His third goal of the game, completing his 16th career hat trick, gave the Red Wings a 3-2 overtime win over the Nashville Predators at Detroit.

“It’s great for him and great for the team,” Detroit Coach Dave Lewis said. “Any time you have a hat trick, it’s an exciting night.”

The victory gave the Red Wings 96 points, the most in the NHL.

Shanahan’s shot from the right side 40 seconds into the extra period beat Tomas Vokoun on the short side and stretched Detroit’s unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1). Shanahan also tied Johnny Bucyk for 17th place on the all-time goals list with 556.

Henrik Zetterberg added two assists for the Red Wings.

Jeremy Stevenson and Denis Arkhipov scored Nashville’s goals.

The Predators are seventh in the Western Conference, tied with the Kings with 79 points, but with more victories than the Kings. St. Louis is one point behind the Predators and Kings.

“You’ve got to be positive. They’re No. 1. We came out with a point, we’re not chasing them,” said Vokoun, who made 28 saves. “We got a point, and that’s a positive thing. It’s not going to be easy, but getting a point in here is positive.”

Calgary 3, St. Louis 0 -- Roman Turek stopped 25 shots for his second shutout and Craig Conroy scored a goal at St. Louis.

The loss dropped the Blues into ninth place in the Western Conference standings. St. Louis has 78 points with 10 games remaining. The Blues have reached the postseason for 24 consecutive years, the longest professional sports streak.

Calgary remained sixth in the conference with 82 points. The Flames are unbeaten in their last five games at 3-0-2. The loss ended a four-game winning streak by St. Louis.

Philadelphia 3, Pittsburgh 3 -- Simon Gagne took advantage of a puckhandling mistake by the Penguins and scored into an open net early in the third period to lift the Flyers to a tie at Pittsburgh.

Penguin goaltender Sebastien Caron stopped a Philadelphia dump-in behind the net as teammate Rico Fata approached, but neither played the puck. The Flyers’ Alex Zhamnov threw it in front for Gagne, who scored his 21st goal.

Edmonton 3, Ottawa 1 -- Radek Dvorak and Ethan Moreau scored 45 seconds apart in the second period and the Oilers won at Edmonton, Canada, ending their NHL-record consecutive overtime streak at seven games. The Oilers’ last regulation win was Feb. 27 in Phoenix.

Minnesota 3, Columbus 2 -- Alexandre Daigle scored the winning goal and added an assist for the Wild at St. Paul, Minn.

Goaltender Marc Denis got most of Daigle’s low shot between the pads, but the puck trickled behind the goalie toward the net. Denis swung his stick at the puck, attempting to clear it away, and knocked it into the net.

Colorado 4, Phoenix 1 -- Newcomer Matthew Barnaby scored for the second straight game, and another recent Avalanche acquisition, Tommy Salo, had 26 saves at Denver.

Dallas 4, Chicago 0 -- Ron Tugnutt stopped 26 shots at Chicago for his first shutout this season and 26th of his career.
