Hernandez’s Goal Lifts Canoga Park

Freshman Salvador Hernandez scored in the 38th minute and Canoga Park withstood several furious scoring attempts by Los Angeles Jordan for a 1-0 victory in the boys’ City Championship final Saturday at East Los Angeles College. It is the first soccer title for the Hunters (19-1-2).

“I knew we had to [play hard] in the first 20 minutes and play our game -- possession and defense,” said Hernandez, whose goal was set up by a give-and-go from senior forward Allanyire Lopez.

The Bulldogs (13-2-4) were without standout forward Abran Madrigal, who had to sit out after receiving two yellow cards in Jordan’s semifinal victory over Bell on Monday.

In the third-place game, Jose Estrella scored twice in the first half and Jorge Arellano scored in the second half to lead Bell (11-1-6) to a 3-2 victory over San Pedro (16-6-4).

Woodland Hills El Camino Real 6, Chatsworth 1 -- Kandice McLaughlin made up for lost time in the girls’ City Championship final.

The senior atoned for her absences -- she received a red card in the semifinals as a sophomore and had national team obligations last year -- with her fourth hat trick of the playoffs to lead the Conquistadores (22-4-1) to their fourth consecutive title.

McLaughlin scored in the 13th minute from just outside the penalty box and sophomore Katie Oakes converted a penalty kick just before halftime for a 2-1 lead. Shawna Williams scored for Chatsworth (10-5-3) two minutes before halftime.

In the Invitational final, Granada Hills Kennedy (19-4-4) scored a 3-1 victory over South Gate (22-6).
