“Assassins,†which won more 2004 Tonys than any other Broadway show, will close July 18, cutting short an engagement that had been expected to last until mid-September.

The Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical about presidential assassins received mostly favorable reviews when it opened in April at Studio 54, and it won five Tonys, including the prize for best musical revival.

Until now, grosses for the show have been healthy, with the musical grossing $429,929 and playing to nearly 95% capacity for the week ending June 20. But by last Sunday, the Roundabout’s more than 40,000 subscribers had seen the show, and its advance had dwindled.
