Karzai Signs New Constitution Into Law

Afghan President Hamid Karzai signed a post-Taliban constitution into law, hailing its promise of equal rights and hoping to unite his splintered Central Asian nation.
Dignitaries including Mohammad Zaher Shah, the former king; Cabinet ministers; foreign diplomats; and military officers applauded at the Foreign Ministry ceremony in the capital city, Kabul.
The text, which declares men and women equal before the law, outlines a democratic Islamic republic.
The new constitution marks a dramatic departure from the harsh version of Islamic law enforced under the ousted Taliban regime.
