No. 7 Tar Heels Upset in Overtime

Florida State rallied from a 24-point deficit and defeated No. 7 North Carolina, 90-81, in overtime Thursday night at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Seminoles’ Todd Galloway, a reserve point guard, sent the game into overtime with a three-point basket with 7.2 seconds left, tying the score at 78-78. The basket was set up when Alexander Johnson blocked a shot by the Tar Heels’ Sean May.

“I was late getting to him,” Johnson said. “He kind of laid it out there for me and I just went and got it.”

The Seminoles (13-5, 2-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) scored the first 11 points of overtime -- six by Tim Pickett -- to take control.

Pickett scored 22 of his 30 points after halftime, and led Florida State with nine rebounds.

Rashad McCants and Melvin Scott each had four three-point baskets in the first half and keyed a 21-0 run that gave North Carolina (11-4, 1-3) the big lead. McCants led five Tar Heels in double figures with 26 points.

Florida State pulled within 49-35 at halftime on a basket by Galloway, who dribbled the length of the court and was going up for a layup when the red light came on the backboard, but officials ruled the shot good.

OTHER GAMES

St. Mary’s (11-7, 2-1 West Coast Conference) made 14 three-point baskets -- one shy of the school record -- in an 84-52 victory over Santa Clara (11-8, 3-1) at Moraga. It is the largest margin of victory in the 191-game series between the San Francisco Bay area rivals. ... Jason McKrieth’s 18-foot jumper with one second remaining lifted Rice (13-4, 5-1 Western Athletic Conference) to a 65-63 victory at Fresno State (9-7, 5-2). McKrieth had 22 points and eight rebounds.

Utah Coach Rick Majerus was cleared in a university investigation into a complaint by a former player who claimed the coach berated him about his partial hearing loss.

Athletic Director Chris Hill confirmed there was a university investigation, launched after a complaint by center Lance Allred after the 2001-02 season.
