Experts Say Bird Flu to Cost Asia $500 Million
Stamping out Asia’s deadly bird flu and restocking its poultry flocks will cost at least $500 million, experts said.
“Enormous amounts of money are required,†Samuel Jutzi, head of animal health at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, said at the end of a three-day meeting on fighting the disease in Bangkok. “We have an amount of $500 million at least mentioned. I think that will be even at the lower end.â€
Bird flu has spread across much of Asia since January, killing at least 22 people and prompting the slaughter of about 100 million birds.
