HP Servers to Use Advanced Micro Chip
Hewlett-Packard Co., the world’s second-largest maker of computers, said it would sell server computers using Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s Opteron chip, signaling a shift away from chips designed by Intel Corp.
In the first half of 2004, Hewlett-Packard will offer two new Opteron-based ProLiant servers, used to run company networks and websites, the company said.
Hewlett-Packard joins IBM Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. in using the Opteron chips. Advanced Micro’s chip will help Hewlett-Packard cater to customers who don’t want machines based on Intel’s more expensive Itanium chip.
Shares of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Advanced Micro rose 2 cents to $14.01 on the New York Stock Exchange. Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard fell 41 cents to $22.50 on the NYSE. Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel rose 20 cents to $29.20 on Nasdaq.
