Historians will study anti-LBJ charge
The History Channel has asked three historians to examine the credibility of a documentary it aired because the widow and former associates of Lyndon B. Johnson complained about the program’s contention that the former president was involved in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Lady Bird Johnson and former presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter had written letters requesting the independent probe.
At issue is “The Guilty Men,†which suggested that Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy as president, was involved in a conspiracy to kill his boss.
The History Channel said historians Robert Dallek, Stanley I. Kutler and Thomas J. Sugrue will evaluate the program and their conclusions will be telecast.
