Group targets drunk boaters

A state boating officials’ group seeks $186,000 from the U.S. Coast Guard to develop a field sobriety test for boaters.

The National Assn. of State Boating Law Administrators envisions tests for boaters similar to those administered by the roadside, says Fred Messman, the association’s president and Nevada’s boating law administrator. Today, officers on water face constraints that compromise prosecutions.

About 16% of California’s 61 boating fatalities last year had blood-alcohol levels of 0.035% or more, state officials say.
