Our Hero, the Secretary of State
In this age of manufactured heroes, all-but-ignored heroes and movie star action-heroes who are now wannabe government heroes, along comes a real hero of whom we can all be proud: California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley (“Don’t Touch That Screen,” by Mark Ehrman, Metropolis, Aug. 1).
He is fighting powerful interests to ensure that our elections in California are fair and accurate. He is looking out for the people’s interests and trying to safeguard our democracy. It is a pity that about 40% of the country won’t appreciate his efforts, since they seem immune to threats facing our election system while they drape themselves in a shroud of patriotic ignorance.
