Still No Deal on Spring Site

Times Staff Writers

The Angels have yet to commit to a new spring home at Goodyear, Ariz., and the mayor says the team is running out of time to move into a training complex there in 2006.

“If we don’t have an agreement within the next couple of weeks, I’d say it’s highly unlikely,” Goodyear Mayor Jim Cavanaugh said.

The city and the Angels agreed long ago on how to split the $40-million construction cost but have yet to settle on how to share revenues and divide operating expenses.

Goodyear voters will be asked Sept. 7 to approve the city’s $10-million share of the construction tab, money that Cavanaugh said will be directed toward parks if a complex is not built. If the city and the Angels do not reach agreement until after the election, Cavanaugh said, the team could be forced to choose between paying overtime in construction costs or delaying the opening until 2007.

Angel owner Arte Moreno said he continues to balance the costs and benefits of a new complex in Goodyear against a renovated facility in Tempe, the team’s current spring home, where its lease extends through 2007. Officials in each city say they have not heard from the Angels in weeks.

“We’re in a pennant race,” Moreno said. “We’re trying to take care of business here.”
