Casino Opponents Target Council Members

A battle is brewing over a proposed Las Vegas-style casino just outside city limits. The Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria, a landless tribe of about 1,000 people with historic ties to Marin and Sonoma counties, hopes to build a casino on 360 acres of hay fields.
The city of Rohnert Park has no jurisdiction over the casino site, but its City Council has become the main target of gambling opponents. The council’s signing of an agreement with the tribe for a $200-million share of the profits in annual installments over the next 20 years has fueled a recall effort in the city.
An Aug. 24 recall election is focusing on two incumbents -- Amie Spradlin and Armando Flores -- who helped craft the agreement.
