Mandatory Community Service Is Immoral
According to your Aug. 10 article, “Monterey Bay Campus Is a Role Model,” the main reason for the rejection of a mandatory community service program by the state college system is lack of funds. Money is not the reason to reject this program. Morality is. The contention that one owes service to his community implies that the community owns his life. This is the essence of slavery.
The purpose of mandatory community service programs in schools is to persuade students that self-interest is immoral. This is inconsistent with the American theory of government.
