Comfort-food craving in city of fine cuisine

Re Susan Spano’s “Hungering for Fatty Comfort Foods of Home” (Her World, Aug. 1): I spent 2 1/2 years off and on in Paris and lived at the Grand Hotel.
Practically every morning I walked to the nearest McDonald’s and had an American breakfast, and, when the mood seized me, I could have a fine hamburger, just as good as In-N-Out burgers any old time. I am surprised that Spano did not mention McDonald’s.

I know just what Spano means when she speaks of her yearning for American food while traveling. I, too, have been to Parisian cafes and have sampled the savory delights of Left Bank corner bakeries.
After two or three days, I woke up in the night to the sounds of the City of Light, wishing for nothing more than an In-N-Out double-double with cheese.
You might take the American far away from the hamburger, but you can’t, for very long, take the hamburger away from the American.
