Max Cleland: Honorable Inspiration or Sore Loser?

The sense of purpose that propelled Max Cleland into a life of politics after his devastating Vietnam War wounds (“The Democrats’ ‘Poster Boy,’ ” by Mark Z. Barabak, July 18), his fury at the policies of the current administration, and the attacks on his Senate record by Republicans bring to mind the old feel-good refrain that I now paraphrase: I was sad because I had no legs, until I met men who had no . . . scruples.

Cleland is a crybaby. That Republican ad wasn’t some last-minute low blow. Cleland had the time and money to answer the charges, but he lost decisively anyway. Is he supposed to be given a political free pass because he is a disabled veteran? By harping on this issue, the Democrats are revealing that they believe voters are stupid enough to be taken in by a TV ad.

Republicans “took” Cleland’s Senate seat. But I’m curious: Were the voters of Georgia involved?

What a proud and powerful cover photograph of Cleland. It should be blown up to poster size and put in every disability office with the caption: “I Can Work.”
