Group Ends Seizure of Cathedral After Talks
From Times Wire Reports
About 50 masked protesters who occupied the San Salvador cathedral for about 24 hours abandoned the building after meeting with a church official. No arrests were made.
Deputy Bishop Gregorio Rosa and human rights ombudsman Beatrice de Carrillo held negotiations with protesters, who demanded that President-elect Tony Saca withdraw troops from Iraq. The group also urged the government to rehire 150 recently fired employees.
Saca, who is scheduled to take office June 1, has said he will leave El Salvador’s nearly 400 troops in Iraq until August.
