Ambassador John Negroponte

Re “Bush Picks Envoy to Iraq,” April 20: Well, it’s certainly comforting to know that Ambassador John Negroponte is returning to the field. He can even resume his erstwhile title of “proconsul.” Maybe the Iraqis don’t know of his alleged interference in the running of Honduras. He’ll even have in Iran an adjoining nation to “influence,” like Nicaragua in the 1980s. This is all right up his alley.

Perfect. The man who had a heavy hand in the “Contra” part of Iran/Contra will be ambassador to Iraq. It can never be too surreal.
