D.A. Will Not Charge Deputies in Man’s Death

The San Luis Obispo County district attorney has decided not to pursue criminal charges against six sheriff’s deputies in an asphyxiation death during an arrest last summer.
Sheriff’s deputies had responded to a disturbance call in Templeton and found Jay Anthony Vestal, 37, who admitted to yelling at a girlfriend, according to the report issued by Deputy Dist. Atty. Tim Covello.
Vestal allegedly resisted arrest on an outstanding marijuana charge. He died after deputies restrained him with handcuffs and leg restraints.
The report states that toxicology tests showed that Vestal had used methamphetamine and cocaine three or four hours before his death.
