No Felony Charges Against Burgess

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office Wednesday rejected the felony charges against UCLA reserve linebacker Xavier Burgess, a freshman who was arrested by university police for verbally threatening a campus parking attendant Monday night.

The case was referred to the Los Angeles city attorney’s office, which, according to spokesman Frank Mateljan, will review it and determine by Friday whether to file a misdemeanor charge.

Burgess, who spent two nights in jail, was in the process of being released Wednesday night. If convicted of a misdemeanor, Burgess, who has no prior criminal record, would likely be fined, placed on probation and assigned to community service. Bruin Coach Karl Dorrell said Burgess, who has been slowed because of a hip injury, will not travel to Stanford for Saturday’s game.

The Bruins, who already are without cornerback Matt Ware and defensive tackle Rodney Leisle, got two minor scares during practice when defensive end Mat Ball began suffering lower-back spasms and cornerback Matt Clark aggravated a left knee injury he suffered earlier this season.

Ball, who thinks he may have tweaked his back while power-lifting earlier Wednesday, participated in about half of the practice and received treatment during the other half. His back tightened up when he came up out of his stance, but he said he will play Saturday.

Clark returned to drills shortly after his injury and said the knee only hurts a little when he jumps. He expects to start Saturday.

Dorrell’s Stevenson Ranch home appears to have been spared by the Simi Valley fire, which forced Dorrell and his family to evacuate Tuesday.

Running back Manuel White, who cracked a bone in his right shoulder blade Saturday night and is out for the season, will not need surgery.
