Iraqi, Kuwaiti Doctors Honored

HAMBURG, Germany — Ali Ismaeel Abbas, 13, a Baghdad boy who lost both arms and his parents in a missile strike, gave Iraqi and Kuwaiti doctors a “Men of the Year” prize Wednesday for their work with victims of the U.S.-led war.
The award was accepted by Kuwaiti doctor Ahmad Shatti, who recently fitted Ali with artificial limbs in London.
“War is something terrible. I don’t understand why adults do things like that,” he said at the World Awards ceremony in Hamburg, which was attended by celebrities, including paralyzed actor Christopher Reeve and actor Michael Douglas.
The World Awards were set up in 2000 by writer Georg Kindel to honor men who help improve the world.
Former Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev, World Awards president, handed Reeve an award for his work for disabled people.
Performer Siegfried Fischbacher from the Las Vegas duo “Siegfried & Roy” received a World Entertainment Award.
